Testing

What are the Testing Levels?

There are 8 levels in total for both skating skill tests and freeskate tests (16 tests in total). They are:

1.) Pre-Preliminary

2.) Preliminary

3.) Pre-Bronze

4.) Bronze

5.) Pre-Silver

6.) Silver

7.) Pre-Gold

8.) Gold

Tests are important because they give your skating a good foundation in many skills, the tests determine what levels you can or cannot compete at, and it is how other people know how much you know about figure skating. Your tests can be added to your college resume, and passing all of your Gold Skating Skills & Gold Freeskate tests in skating is the equivalent to getting your Bachelor’s degree in college.

Only about 5% of all figure skaters pass their Gold Skating Skills test and only about 3% of all figure skaters pass their Gold Freeskate test, so it is a big deal when you pass these tests!

How Do You Take a Test?

There are two ways to take any tests; in person or virtual.

I have all of my skaters do virtual tests because I think it allows them to focus on mastering skills better, and we can work the test into our normal schedules which makes it more efficient to take tests. There is a virtual test session happening somewhere in the U.S. every week!

What Do I Need for My Test?

Register!

Myself, or the coach who is helping you with the test, will send the family a test session link to register with. Please register when they tell you to register. All test sessions have registration deadlines, and some test sessions can fill up very quickly. When you register, it saves your skater’s spot in the test session. It also helps the test chairperson plan. There are different levels of judges needed for certain tests.

Please read through the information on the registration page. Every test session can run differently so read through any instructions on how they want you to submit the test (i.e. they may want you to send an email, they may want a Google Drive link, they may want you to submit it through Entryeeze, etc.).

Forms You Will Need

Again, see how the test session wants these forms. Some test sessions have you fill out the Name and Likeness form when you register.

You will need to submit these forms when you send in your test video:

  1. Permission to Test- if you are testing with a club that isn’t the one you are a Home Club member of (which is totally fine~ it isn’t necessary to always test with your club), you have to submit a Permission to Test form that validates that your club knows you are testing and that you are in good standing with them. You simply log into your Entryeeze account under your Club’s name (go to Entryeeze.com, click “Find My Club,” find your club, and then log in that way), and a link to your Permission to Test should be right there.

  2. Affidavit (click on Affidavit to print)- the coach and the skater has to fill this form out so parents don’t need to do anything with this form. Please print the affidavit and bring it with on the day that you test.

  3. Name & Likeness Form(click on Name to print)- Parents need to fill out this form. It just means that you give consent for the judges to watch a video of your skater.

What to Bring to Your Test

Please bring a phone or ipad to your lesson when you are testing. Sometimes the video can upload faster if you upload it directly from the device the video was taken on.

Also, bring the affidavit form to your lesson so the coaches and skater can fill it out!

What Should a Skater Wear to Their Test?

Skating Skills Tests

For skating skill tests, skaters should wear tight black leggings (pants for boys) that do not have any holes or other colors on them.

They should also wear a tight black leotard or black shirt that is tucked in so if they lift their arms, no one sees their tummy.

Over the tight black leotard, skaters should wear a fitted black, zip up jacket without a hood. A tight fitting Columbia fleece jacket is fine, your club’s jacket is fine, a black solid Lululemon or other workout zip up top is also fine.

Skaters should also wear gloves that are black or nude color that are clean and do not have holes.

They should also have their hair pulled back out of their face nicely (no flyaways or messy looking hair). Buns are best, braids that stay out of your face are fine, and for the first four tests (Pre-Pre through Bronze) a nice ponytail is okay.

Make-up is not necessary, but you can wear some if it looks natural and enhances your performance.

Freeskate Tests

For a freeskate test, skaters will need to wear a dress or costume that fits the theme or style of the program. Make sure to discuss with Melissa what dress or costume a skater should wear.

At the lower levels, wearing a simple outfit (i.e. a solid color dress) is fine. But by the time you get to the Pre-Silver and Gold levels, your costume is evaluated as part of your presentation/artistic score so it is more important to have an outfit that depicts the music.

Your hair should be pulled out of your face and look nice and put together. Buns, braids and twists are all good options.

Your tights (unless you are a boy), should be clean and not have holes or runs in them. They should also match your skin tone. Watch that all your skin tone materials match your skin- ask Melissa if you need help or resources.

After the Test

The test session will email you or me (or both of us) the test results. Generally expect to get the results 1-14 days after the test deadline.

Keep copies of your test papers! I usually keep them in a Google Drive folder. The test session should submit your test papers to US Figure Skating, and USFS puts the passed tests on your account. Sometimes, tests get lost of misplaced so it is good to keep copies.
