Music
For the most part, myself, the choreographer and the skater select music that fits where the skater is at developmentally and what is going to encourage the next phase of their development to blossom. Sometimes the music is strategic or edited strategically. As skater’s become older, they become more in charge of finding the music and working with myself and the choreographer to find the right cut.
Parents can help with music selection, but they do need to be taking the advice of the coach and choreographer otherwise a poorly selected piece of music can tank a skater’s score or can even prevent them from passing a test.
Now skater's songs also have to have the correct licensing rights. This can affect what song we choose as well.
Depending upon the piece of music, sometimes families work with the music editor or sometimes myself or the choreographer does. For the most part, I use Studio Unisons for music editing. It takes about a month to have Hugo edit your music unless you pay rush fees.
Families should try to take care of any licensing of the music on their own. Myself or the choreographer may check on it as we do the music selection, but families should confirm it. If you need to get a special license to use a song, it can take up to 90 days to get this license so plan accordingly.
Families are in charge of uploading all music to competition and testing portals. I usually have kept skater’s music in their Google Drive folder for simplicity’s sake.
